Questions we get a lot
Is there really no contract?
Correct. Service is month to month. Cancel with 30 days notice and return the gateway within two weeks; there is no early termination fee at any tier.
What shows up on the first bill?
The prorated first month, the full second month billed in advance, and a $12.50 regulatory recovery fee. Installation is $0 for residential tiers when the drop already reaches the property. If a new drop has to be trenched, that is quoted before any digging starts.
Can I use my own router instead of the gateway?
Yes. The ONT hands off untagged Ethernet with DHCP, so any router works — no PPPoE username or VLAN tag required. You still keep the gateway on site so support can isolate a fault to the fiber side, but it can sit powered off in a closet.
Will I actually get the full speed over Wi-Fi?
Over Wi-Fi, usually not on the top tier. A modern 6E client in the same room will see roughly 1.5–2.5 Gbps on Timberline. The full 5 Gbps needs a wired multi-gig NIC. Ridge and Summit generally do hit their rated speed over Wi-Fi in a normal-sized house.
Do you throttle or prioritize any traffic?
No. There is no application shaping, no torrent throttling, and no paid prioritization. The only traffic management is a broadcast-storm limit on the access layer, which no normal customer traffic reaches.
What happens if the power goes out?
The ONT and gateway both need power, so service drops unless you have the battery backup add-on or your own UPS. The fiber plant itself is unaffected — there is no active electronics between the property and the hut that depend on street power.
